Sam’s most recent article in Passagemaker Magazine features the Devlin 37. Usually he designs for a customer with a list of requirements. What if he did a design just for himself? The result of doing just that is a 37 foot long full-displacement, fuel-sipping, diesel cruiser with a fantail stern.

The Surf Scoter 24 downloadable study plans add 2 feet to the Surf Scoter 22 Cruiser – the result – larger cockpit and berth area, forward slanted pilothouse windows and an enclosed head. The plans show both the traditional Surf Scoter 24 with the scooped sheer and flatter transom and the Fishing version with the straight sheer line and the altered transom. Both versions are now available as kits.

Storm Petrel was inspired by a customer who admired an Alvin Beal 26 foot lobster boat from the 1950s as rebuilt and reconfigured by Doug Hylan back in 2002. Sam knew the boat well and we currently have that very boat here in Olympia. The customer wanted a longer version with more of an interior including an enclosed steering station, a small head compartment and compact galley and a wood stove plus a v-berth. And of course it needed to be a stich and glue build. Sam designed the Storm Petrel for Cyndie who had been brought up in the boating world of Seattle. Today Cyndie’s son carries on a family tradition as the owner of Storm Petrel.

Sam has always admired the boat designs of the late Bill Garden. Several years ago a customer wanted Sam to do his version of Bill Garden’s 38 footer Dynamo (which became the wooden boat named Kintore). The design reached the stage of study plans and then life took the customer a different direction. The seed had been planted and it brings us to Sam’s newest study plan – the Dynamo Too 45, a stretched version that beckons us to go to sea once more. The 4 pages of study plans include two flavors, powerboat and motorsailer. The motorsailer version could take a family of 4 or 5 or 6 around the world!
