Storm Petrel was inspired by a customer who admired an Alvin Beal 26 foot lobster boat from the 1950s as rebuilt and reconfigured by Doug Hylan back in 2002. Sam knew the boat well and we currently have that very boat here in Olympia. The customer wanted a longer version with more of an interior including an enclosed steering station, a small head compartment and compact galley and a wood stove plus a v-berth.  And of course it needed to be a stitch and glue build. Sam designed the Storm Petrel for Cyndie who had been brought up in the boating world of Seattle. Today Cyndie’s son carries on a family tradition as the owner of Storm Petrel.

Cyndie was an inspiration to the building crew and with two of Sam’s Storm Petrel 33 builders in tow the trio attended  the course for the Coast Guard’s 6-pack captain’s license. All three passed the exam and Sam (already having a Coast Guard Master Captain’s license) found himself surrounded with 3 fellow Coast Guard licensed captains.

Storm Petrel is powered by twin 110 HP Yanmar diesel’s making steering in tight spots easy and giving redundancy in case of engine issues. She cruises comfortably in rough conditions slicing through the seas at a steady 15 knots and a little more when needed.
