What is a true motorsailer? Hopefully the Camarone 40 is the perfect answer to that question. Sam designed the boat for two Canadian scientists who plan to travel globally over several years to study a wide variety of geographic locales. Powered half with gaff rigged sails and half with a John Deere diesel the fantailed ocean capable boat should be able to go deep into fjords where wind is erratic and the motor crucial and also cover thousands of ocean miles with the sails bringing down fuel bills and increasing the range.

This study plans package offers 4 drawings and an article describing how the design came to be and what problems this particular design solves for the clients. Here’s how the article opens:

“This month’s design is the Camarone 40 (Spanish for “shrimp”), which is neither a full-on sailboat nor a full-on powerboat. I designed her for Spencer Duncan and Eric Letham, two biologists from British Columbia, Canada, planning a several-year journey around the world. Their plan was to conduct research, and they wanted a motorsailer as their base.”

Sam has long been mesmerized by the photographic beauty of Greenland. Two years ago he treated himself to a high quality camera and a chartered boat to trip her shores. His creative juices were fired up after experiencing Greenland’s beauty first-hand and he thought “could I design a boat that could get me from the shores of Olympia, Washington to the Greenland coast?” Oso Blanco (literally “white bear” in Spanish} became the result. A 54 foot motorsailor that could provide a small footprint on the water with its long and narrow design. There would be a gunnel to gunnel master’s cabin aft, a generous bridgedeck in the center, and crews quarters forward. The sailing rig would help steady the boat and increase the range with both sails and engine working together. It would be a sturdy and sea-kindly vessel providing a wonderful platform from which to photograph and study the arctic shores and wildlife.

If the Arctic crossing wasn’t in the cards Oso Blanco could take you from the West Coast to the Panama Canal and through the Caribbean and up the East Coast to Greenland from the South. Then from there to Iceland and from Iceland to Europe and the canals where you could lower the tabernacle masts for a low profile. Could this dream become a reality?

This lovely boat was built here at the shop many years ago. It found a wonderful life in British Columbia for many years with a documentary film maker and his family. Sadly, one day while it sat at its mooring buoy, someone boarded and robbed all her valuables and then sunk the boat by flooding the bilges. What the thief didn’t know was that it’s almost impossible to sink a Devlin Boat. It was found semi-submerged, bailed out and brought to shore where it was cleaned up and rebuilt. Full plans never materialized, however the Oysta 30 inspired Sam’s 29 foot Rover designs, all four versions of which are available in our powerboat study plans section. These aren’t motorsailors. However, they share the double ended hull and the North Sea Troller vision.

Sam has always loved this style boat. In fact his love of the double ended Norwegian fishing troller resulted in his Oysta 28 motorsailor cruiser. We hoped it would lead to full construction plans someday, but for now that’s on hold.

Years ago we had a customer who wanted us to build the hull for Sam’s Oysta 25 idea. He really liked the idea of a double ended and short North Sea fishing boat styled motorsailor. The build disappeared off our radar and we hope it’s alive and well somewhere today. This is one ultra-seaworthy and compact little cruiser.
